Sports facilities at Wellesley are first class – aside from beautifully prepared playing fields, tennis and netball courts, a sports hall, dance studio, we are also fortunate enough to benefit from two squash courts, an indoor swimming pool, climbing wall and shooting range. All pupils are provided with opportunities to develop their skills and experiences in a range of team and individual sports and we are lucky to benefit from highly talented, passionate and qualified coaches. We are also fortunate to have an excellent link with the world renowned Open venue, Royal St George’s – and our pupils receive coaching from the Professionals at the Golf Club.
Our philosophy is that sport provides great learning opportunities for the pupils and we are equally committed to and proud of those at the participation end of our provision as we are of our more elite performers. Our team of staff adopt a “coaching” approach to games and encourage our pupils to make decisions and think for themselves. Enjoyment is also clearly a major aim for all participants and the evidence is there for all to see whilst watching our extensive games programme in action.
We have a rich sporting tradition and are proud to talk of several County (and England) cricketers, Olympic medallists and many other Welleslians who have gone onto to play professional sport. Indeed, the current captain of Kent CCC is an Old Welleslian.
