Maths competitions

A succession of Maths competitions took place the week commencing 23rd of April, with some excellent results from our teams.

The week’s first competition took place in Ashford School, the venue of an annual Year 5 Maths Competition. Our Block 4 students competed against 21 other schools. After a steady start our team really began to find their stride, ultimately just missing the top spot, finishing second, the best result we have had in this competition. 

The same group split into two pairs on Thursday afternoon for the annual Maths Challenge that takes place at Junior King's. There was a record number of participants with 44 teams from 22 schools vying for the top spot. The competition was fierce, but a duo from Wellesley House came out on top - an outstanding achievement. 

Also on Thursday, Under 13 and Under 12 teams travelled to Sutton Valence School for their annual Prep Schools' Maths Competition.  All the talk prior to the event centred on whether our Block 1 team could achieve the unthinkable and retain the trophy for a third successive year. Having enjoyed the legendary tutelage of Mr Tunbridge surely anything was possible. We entered two teams in the Under 12 competition. Both teams finished in very respectable positions, taking equal 5th and equal 10th place.  Our Under 13 team had much to live up to in a competition we had won the previous two years, and they came very close to emulating their predecessors.  After a steady start in this 30-minute contest, we took the lead and held onto it as the end approached. With Marlborough House gaining ground, it was clear we were in for a nail-biting finish. In the dying seconds, Marlborough House answered a question to draw level.  This meant that a tiebreaker question was needed and, unfortunately, we were just unable to crack this final problem ahead of our adversary.  Nevertheless, this was an excellent effort, and the team can be very proud of a performance that capped off a most successful week for all of our young Mathematicians.
