From the Headmaster’s Study

As our Block 1 pupils head off for a week of camping (or is it glamping?!) at Nethergong, our Block 2 to JL pupils will sit some internal examinations throughout the course of this week. This will be a valuable experience for these pupils, and a useful indicator of academic progress and areas for development. We will be encouraging all pupils to approach these exams – and their results – with a positive mindset.
The electronic calendar looks full for the next few weeks of term, so please do keep a check on upcoming events. We hope that the pupils enjoy all of the opportunities and variety that lies ahead – in and out of the classroom – in the latter stages of this term.

OW News

We are delighted to report that Old Wellesians, Isabella Cable and Fleur Rex, have both been appointed as Head of House (Mitchinson’s and Luxmoore respectively).  Very well done to both girls and we wish them well with these senior roles in their final year at The King’s School, Canterbury.

Festival of Cricket

After the roaring success of last summer’s “festival of cricket”, we write to ascertain interest in you (or a suitable substitute) having a go at some cricket on Saturday 25th June.  It will be a very relaxed afternoon, with (providing parents are keen to play against their children) a number of fixtures (hard or soft ball as appropriate) taking place on our playing fields that afternoon.  The Friends of Wellesley are very kindly providing Pimms and lemonade as a refreshment for all (adult) cricketers.

Please can I ask that you complete this brief form stating your interest to play?  I hope that we have as much fun as we did last year and we encourage all levels of cricketers and recognise effort over skill!

Platinum Jubilee Rose

As a token of our appreciation for the outstanding service of Her Majesty the Queen during her 70 year reign, a Platinum Jubilee Rose will be planted in the fabulous Wellesley grounds together with a commemorative plaque.

Follow our cricket scores online

This season (IT-permitting!), we will be live scoring 1st XI and Colts A (and selected other) cricket matches using the ECBs ‘Play Cricket’ scoring software. If you would like to follow the action you can do so by downloading the play cricket live app – instructions and links below.

Once you’ve downloaded the app click the button in the top left corner and search for Wellesley Haddon Dene. On the Wellesley Haddon Dene page, click the stars next to all of the teams listed. Finally click the home button in the bottom left corner and the available matches will appear.

Common Entrance

Our Block 1 pupils have all completed their common entrance exams and now enter the anchor leg of their Wellesley Haddon Dene journey. The Leavers’ programme began in some style on Friday morning following the final Latin exam with the customary trip to Morelli’s and a bracing dip in the sea (along with a little bit of beach cricket of course)!

Summer Barn Dance

On Saturday evening, in glorious sunshine, members of the Wellesley community descended on the Solley’s barn for an evening of dancing and merriment. There was some superb dancing on show from Wellesley families (young and old) and much fun was had by all. Guests enjoyed a delicious hog roast, ice cream and refreshments whilst taking part in some traditional barn dancing with the help and encouragement of the superb Contraband musicians. The evening concluded with the Headmaster drawing the raffle, with some fantastic prizes up for grabs. Our thanks go to all who were able to support the event, and of course, to Mr and Mrs Solley for their generous hospitality and Anne Obee and Natasha Hildyard, along with other members of the Friends of Wellesley committee, for their supreme organisational efforts. It was a superb Wellesley event.

Cake Sale – Monday 20th June – Morning Break

The School Council were so inspired by their visit from Rebecca Smith, author of ‘Super Daisy’, and the amazing work of The Little Princess Trust that they would like to hold a Cake Sale on Monday 20th June to raise some money for this important charity.

Pupils can bring their cakes and bakes into the school dining room on Monday 20th June at drop off.  Please can we ask that cakes do not contain nuts and have a label to say what they are.

A small charge will be added to your school bill if your child chooses to buy any cakes.

Thank you for your support of this hugely worthwhile cause.

Pre-Prep

We have enjoyed lots of time outside this week. Reception children were spotted mastering relay racing in P.E. and all of Pre-prep enjoyed a Forest School session on Friday afternoon. Two U9 cricket teams travelled to Northbourne for some closely contested games on Wednesday. We are looking forward to swimming lessons this week and some upcoming trips in the week’s ahead. It was lovely to see Pre-prep families at the Barn Dance on Saturday – thanks as always for your support.

Block 1 Leavers’ Trip

This week, our Block 1 pupils head off to Nethergong for 3 nights of camping as part of their leavers’ programme. Aside from the fun and frolics of a few days away from school, the pupils will enjoy (amongst other things) a trip to the County Ground at Canterbury to watch some cricket (hopefully seeing an Old Welleslian playing for Kent), a trip to Chessington World of Adventures, some raft building, canoeing, a country walk to a local pub for supper and a BBQ at the camp.

Maths Competition

Four of our Block 4 pupils head to Junior Kings for a Maths competition on Thursday of this week for this annual challenge that will test the logical minds of our Welleslians!

Kent Independent Schools Athletics Championships

Mr Waldie and Mr Franklin will take a group of senior pupils to this annual competition at Gillingham on Friday. Our athletes will compete in a range of events including sprint, middle distance, throwing and jumping events. It promises to be an action packed day and we wish our competitors well.

Exeat

A number of our overseas boarders will be staying with us over this exeat and enjoying a programme of outings and activities. Those not staying should return between 5.30 and 6.30pm on Sunday 19th June. A roast dinner will be served at 5.30pm for those who wish to arrive in time for supper.

Team of the Week

Mr and Mrs Franklin very much look forward to seeing the School Orchestra on Thursday break time for Team of the Week on the front lawn in recognition of their hard work during weekly early morning rehearsals.
