From the Headmaster’s Study

On Saturday morning, I met (remotely) with a number of the Block 4 (year 5) parents to share information about and discuss the Senior school entry process. One of Wellesley’s great strengths is that our pupils move on to a range of different senior schools both nearby and further afield. Over the course of the next few weeks, beginning today, Block 1 (year 8) Wellesley pupils will be visiting Senior schools for some scholarship assessments. Our scholarship candidates will be visiting The King’s School Canterbury, Harrow, Sevenoaks and St Lawrence College for various assessments, practicals, group tasks and interviews in drama, art, music and sport. All academic scholarship assessments will take place in the Summer term. They have all worked extremely hard in preparing for these and we wish them all the very best of luck. Irrespective of the outcome, the experience gained will be of value to these Welleslians.

Sunday Trip

On Sunday 23rd January in the afternoon, the boarders had great fun at the Lost Island Adventure Golf in Margate. Thanks to Mr Latteur and Miss Wallace for arranging the trip and we can report that Miss Wallace managed at least one hole-in-one!

Pre Prep

News from Pre Prep

This week the nursery children have continued their topic, ‘ People who help us’ and they are looking forward to finding out about being a nurse from Sister Carol and Sister Ruth. They had their first session at soft play which was a great success and they have enjoyed yoga sessions and dough disco.
Form JK have written imaginative and extensive lists of items they would take to space – among the items were mince pies!!
It’s been a busy week for Form JB. The Year 3 children travelled to St Lawrence College for their first very successful rugby matches where they were excellent ambassadors for Wellesley. On Friday the whole class visited Canterbury Cathedral and having dressed as characters from the tale of Thomas Becket they toured the cathedral acting out the story. Following this they participated in a number of activities in the Education Centre. It was a really fascinating day and of course the highlight was the packed lunches!

Team of the Week

This week’s team are Form JB, who conducted themselves brilliantly on their recent outing to Canterbury Cathedral and were excellent ambassadors for Wellesley. They will be treated to cookies and juice during Friday morning break time.

Monday Music

It’s been fantastic to see so many children back in the music school for lessons. For more information about what lessons are available please email jhb@wellesleyhouse.net.

The Rowland Constantine Shield

Sadly the Rowland Constantine Shield has been postponed as one of the teams has been affected by Covid-19. Our team of Hector Hulme, Raf Cable, Freya Ralph and Septimus Oduwole will eagerly await the re-arranged date.

Parking / pick up on Wednesday

We are hosting a Colts rugby festival (involving 5 schools) on Wednesday afternoon, as well as senior netball fixtures. All minibuses will be parked on our playing fields. Parking will be available for parents around the squarabout or – if this is full – through the barrier in designated areas – but please take extra care driving as there will be plenty of activity taking place on our playing fields. Thank you for your diligence and understanding of this.

Burns Night – Tuesday 25th January (pupils in JL and above)

We are all looking forward to our Burns Night celebrations on Tuesday 25th January and pupils should please come to school in the following uniform:
boys: grey trousers, white shirt, tie and navy jumper (no jacket)
girls: kilt, white blouse and navy cardigan
After a supper of haggis, tatties and neeps followed by Scottish dancing, we will see the fruits of last week’s rehearsals. At supper, the Headmaster will address the haggis (or he will persuade another member of staff to as his Scottish accent is really not good!) Tuesday evening activities are cancelled as a consequence and day pupils attending the event will be available to be collected at 6.45pm from the usual pick-up points. If you have any queries regarding the day bus, please contact the office.

Exeat

On Friday we have the first exeat of the term. Pre-prep children can be collected from Junior House at 1pm and pupils in Years 4 to 8 will be ready for collection at 1.30pm from the usual pick-up points.
Boarders should return to school between 5.30pm and 7pm on Sunday (with a hot meal served at 6pm in the dining room) or at 8.20am on Monday morning.

OW News

During a King’s School, Canterbury service at Canterbury Cathedral on Sunday evening, three OWs Isabella Cable, Fleur Rex and Tiffany Zhang were awarded honorary academic scholarships . The OWs received their awards for outstanding performance in their GCSE exams.
