From the Headmaster’s Study

As we enter the last full week of term, it is extraordinary to see how much is going on in and around the school. We were delighted that so many family members were able to take part and support our Festival of Cricket experience on Saturday afternoon – I hope that there aren’t too many stiff bodies today (or damaged egos – my bowling was dispatched by an unforgiving year 7 pupil!). My thanks go to everyone who made the day such a success. This week, we very much look forward to welcoming families to our French Soiree on Tuesday, the pre-prep sports extravaganza on Friday morning and our Speech Day and Sports Day on Saturday morning and afternoon – about which there are further details below.

Kent Prep Schools Golf Championship

Six Wellesians took part in the annual Kent Prep Schools’ Golf Championship on Thursday afternoon of last week. The event, organised and run by The King’s School Canterbury took place at Canterbury Golf Club and involved teams from Junior King’s and St Ronan’s. The format for the afternoon was 9 holes of foursomes golf. Therefore, Wellesley fielded 3 pairs in the competition, with each pair playing together taking alternate shots on each hole in this very challenging of formats. The boys played with such skill, ability and teamwork in their pairs and quite remarkably, Wellesley secured 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Archie Brown (Block 1) and William Franklin (Block 2) collected the shield with 29 points, Freddie Southorn and Freddie Loudon (both Block 3) were runners up with 26 points and Rio Goddard (Block 2) and Jamie Montgomery (Block 3) were third with 25 points. Very well done to all of the boys for representing the school with such pride and sportsmanship.

Dragon’s Apprentice

This year’s Dragon’s Apprentice project was a huge success. As part of the Leavers’ Programme, Block 1 pupils formed four business teams and pitched their products to a panel of parent “Dragons”. Mrs Kate Sturgess, Mr Thomas Obee and Mr Peter Reading chose the most promising and well-pitched business idea as the winner. Sageglow, masterminded by an all-female team, was the winning business. Thank you so much to our three “Dragons” who gave up their morning and offered some wise words to our young entrepreneurs.

Festival of Cricket

Saturday afternoon saw no less than 6 highly competitive fixtures taking place between the parents and the pupils on the immaculately prepared pitches of Wellesley Haddon Dene. Aside from the quality of cricket, there was some wonderful cricketing attire on display as parents (grandparents, godparents, aunties and siblings) pitched their skills against a very determined and well drilled pupil body. Most importantly, much fun was had by all and our thanks go to all families who were able to play or support, to Mr and Mrs Long for the sumptuous strawberries and to the Friends of Wellesley for the mid innings refreshments, as well as our thanks to key members of the home team that made it all happen from the catering team, Mark the groundsman, the staff who umpired and Mr Spencer for his oversight and organisation. It was quite simply a wonderful community event.

Pre-Prep

Another busy week ahead with transition mornings and sports morning. No Codekids this Tuesday but StageCoach will run on Thursday.

JK trip to Howletts

It was a busy and fun-filled day at Howletts. The Education team were very impressed with the children’s observations and questions. It was a boiling hot day and a highlight was seeing the gorillas enjoying ice lollies!

JB Marlowe Theatre trip – Billionaire Boy

For some of the children this was their first experience of a live theatre production. A brilliant set, fabulous cast and catchy tunes. Everyone had a great time. Thank you to Mrs Franklin for accompanying us.

Junior House Sports Morning (Nursery – Year 2)

We’re looking forward to welcoming families from Nursery to Year 2 on Friday morning. Tea and coffee will be served outside from 8.30am and the races and events will begin from 9am.

We very much look forward to this flagship event in our cultural calendar. Weather permitting, we will enjoy French songs, wine, cheese and petit four (courtesy of Mr and Mrs Symington Mills) in the beautiful environs of the Orchard gardens. We look forward to welcoming parents of Block 4 and JL pupils. Please park in the main school and make your way over to the Orchard across our playing fields. The event starts from 4pm.

Whole School Photo

On Wednesday morning at 10.15am the whole school photograph will be taken. Nursery children who are not usually in school on a Wednesday are welcome to come into school for the morning. Children in the nursery and Pre-prep should wear their summer school uniform. Children in Years 4 to 8 should wear the following: girls – best uniform (navy cardigan, blouse, long navy socks/tights and kilt) boys – grey trousers, white shirt, navy v-neck jumper and tie. Further details on ordering the photographs will be sent out on Wednesday afternoon.

Mr and Mrs Franklin very much look forward to seeing the Block 1 pupils for their innovative and creative work as part of the Dragon’s Apprentice Competition.
